Solo Show – Mobile Milwaukee – July Gallery Night – July 23
Saturday, July 3rd, 2010
UPDATE: Looks like the show will only be Friday night. So come down and visit me on Friday, and win something cool from me, or the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre!
I am very excited to announce my first solo show. I will be displaying a selection of my mobile photographs this July 23 at the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre as a part of July Gallery Night and Day. My mobile wanderings started about a year and a half ago. I have taken and uploaded a photo almost every single day since I started.
A photographer I follow Chase Jarvis came up with this quote which I love: “The best camera is the one you have with you”. So since I always have a phone, why not use the camera on it to create art. The camera phone photographs started out as a curiosity; what could I create with a limited camera. At the same time I also started photographing with other limited cameras such as pinholes and holgas. It was kind of a experiment on technology, photography and art. The experiment quickly became an obsession. I started posting “Morning Photographs” everyday via Twitpic. On my walk to work I would make a photograph and upload it right from my phone to Twitpic, and then share via my Twitter account. I received a good mix of response, most of which was positive, so I keep posting a photo every morning. I then started a blog to collect my favorite mobile photos: Milwaukee by iPhone.

It has been a fun and interesting journey, one which I can’t see stopping any time soon. The thought of posting a photo every day really keeps me on my toes, and spurs a wide range of other creative ideas. It really keeps my eyes looking for something new, even more so than they already are.
Please come and join me on July 23 at the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre:
Milwaukee Chamber Theatre
Broadway Theatre Center’s Skylight Bar & Bistro
158 N. Broadway, 2nd Floor

From the Gallery Night website:
30) BROADWAY THEATRE CENTER – (158 N. Broadway – 414.291.7800 – www.broadwaytheatrecenter.com) Mobile Milwaukee. The Broadway Theatre Center, the Historic Third Ward’s arts and entertainment destination, presents “Mobile Milwaukee,” a photography series by Jake Rhode taken via mobile phone. Guests can participate in this interactive exhibit. Skylight Opera Theatre, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre and Renaissance Theaterworks tickets are also on sale. Friday: 5 to 9pm
The Skylight bar will be open and ready for your drink orders. Also the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre will be giving away items such as ticket discounts as part of their release party for their new website. Two of my mobile photographs will also be given away as well, in coordination with Milwaukee Chamber Theare’s promotion. All you have to do is come to the show July 23, sign up for the Chamber Theatre’s email list on a custom iPad app, press the button and see if you have won something.
Another thing I am trying out for this show is the addition of barcodes to each piece in the show. For each piece there will be a barcode that you can scan with your mobile phone, and attach comments or your own digital media through a service called StickyBits. If you have not heard of Stickybits yet, check it out, download the app to your phone and come ready to share your own thoughts or digital content. If you buy a piece at the show, you will also be able to check out the comments and content added through Stickybits. See what people said about it, and possibly get added content from me as time goes by…
So come, talk, mingle, drink, check out the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre’s new site, check out some artwork, try and win something, have another drink, buy some art, buy some tickets to Milwaukee Chamber Theatre’s new season, and go home happy.
